The datum point is that a completely random sample has a design factor of 1.0. «Sigma» est une lettre de l'alphabet grec, utilisée dans les statistiques comme mesure de variation. En rapprochant les spécifications des clients et la variation, l'on obtient la méthode permettant d'évaluer les défauts par million d'occasions (DPMO) ce qui se traduit en un indice de capabilité Z. Les informations fournies par les clients détermineront l'objectif et les améliorations qui doivent être apportées aux processus stratégiques. En règle générale, les produits et les processus commerciaux des entreprises prospères du monde entier fonctionnent à 3-3,5 Sigma, ce qui implique respectivement un DPMO de 67 000 et de 23 000.
